Thinking of Competing? Things to Consider Before Starting Prep!

Preparing for a bodybuilding show is a transformative journey that requires dedication, discipline, and a clear understanding of what lies ahead. Before you embark on this exciting adventure, here are some key things you should know:

  • Commitment is Key: Preparing for a bodybuilding show is not just a physical challenge but also a mental one. You will need to commit to a strict diet, intense training regimen, and lifestyle adjustments.

  • Time and Patience: Achieving your desired physique takes time. Most competitors require at least 12-20 weeks of focused preparation, but this can vary based on individual goals and starting point.

  • Nutrition is Vital: Your diet will play a crucial role in your preparation. You will likely need to follow a structured meal plan that includes specific macronutrient ratios and timing of meals to support muscle growth, muscle retention and fat loss.

  • Training for Success: Your training regimen should be tailored to build lean muscle tissue in a growing phase; or retain muscle mass and reduce body fat while dieting. This typically involves a combination of resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, and posing practice

  • Posing Practice: Posing is an essential part of bodybuilding competitions. Practice your poses regularly to showcase your physique confidently on stage. We recommend working with a posing coach as soon as you start your prep!

  • Rest and Recovery: Adequate rest and recovery are essential for progress. Ensure you are getting enough sleep and allowing your muscles to recover between workouts.

  • Mindset Matters: Prepare yourself mentally for the challenges ahead. Competing in a bodybuilding show can be demanding, so maintaining a positive mindset is crucial.

  • Seek Professional Guidance: Consider working with a coach or trainer who has experience preparing competitors for bodybuilding shows. They can provide valuable guidance and support throughout your journey.

  • Budget Wisely: Competing in bodybuilding shows can be costly, with expenses such as entry fees, tanning, posing suits, and travel. Plan your budget carefully to avoid financial stress.

  • Post-Show Plan: Have a plan for after the competition. Whether you plan to continue competing, transition into off-season training, or focus on other goals, having a clear post-show plan can help you stay motivated and maintain your progress.
